Essential Homeschooling |
|
Essential homeschooling is not about trying to mimic a classroom setting at home, expensive curriculum and stressful learning. It's setting our eyes on Christ and offering up our lives for His service. It's finding simplicity in daily living and loving each other, embracing the challenges and cherishing the moment because we know these years won't last and what we instill in our children today will determine who they will be tomorrow.
Over the years as a mother I've been known out of frazzled frustration to question "how do I get it all done?" or even "is it possible to get it all done?". Mountains of laundry, piles of toys, dishes to clean, corners to dust, noses to wipe, diapers to change and the list goes on. As a homeschool mom I find that question looms overhead even more as these days I've traded the dirty diapers for teaching algebra to a high schooler and phonics to the littles, not to mention field trips, library visits and co-op classes. So really, is it possible to get everything done everyday? I'm beginning to believe the answer is yes and no. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us there is a time for everything under heaven. Verse 6 can speak to any mom who has spent time on a Sunday morning searching for lost socks, "a time to search and a time to give up" (NIV) LOL. That verse literally made me chuckle today as I am helping my youngest search for his gloves so he can play in the snow. In reading verses 1-8 I'm reminded that there is a time to do some things and a time for others, meaning no it's not always meant that everything be done at the same time or on the same day. These verses tell us to consider the situation. Depending on the circumstances some things just are not important at the time. Sometimes it is more important to stop cleaning and read with our kids. A sick baby needs momma more than the dishes do and at times schoolwork needs to be set aside to tend to some much needed housework. This made me think of my cleaning schedule that I haven't been following too well lately. I've been so busy that I've gotten caught up in the idea of getting it all done and the end result has been a very stressed momma. I'm a schedule person at heart. My brain thrives on order and lists. I loved my schedule so I don't really know when or why I stopped using it. When I first made my schedule I started by listing everything that needed to be done on a weekly basis, even dusting the baseboards and scheduling in time to declutter. Then I broke it into days, Monday through Saturday, giving myself a day of rest on Sunday. Before my schedule I didn't get everything finished during the week and spent Sunday afternoon doing housework. God designed for us to have some down time and I believe it's as important to the mind as it is the body to have a day off. Personally for me, schedules keeps me on track and help me to keep everything in perspective when I become stressed and rather neurotic about trying to get everything done. I have a very detailed schedule for my days that includes schoolwork, co-op, etc. But my basic schedule is short and sweet and reminds me at the beginning of each day what is the main things I want to get done. For example, Monday is the day I have scheduled for the girls' laundry. Unless there is something that needs to be done immediately I don't worry about the boys' laundry or towels, those have a day they are scheduled for. Tuesday I clean the bathroom, including baseboards, declutter and all, so I'm not going to feel pressed to vacuum the living room floor that day. Scheduling my housework this way really does take a lot of pressure off of me. I can feel confident that while everything might not be completed everyday, by the end of the week everything has been done, laundry has been caught up, baseboards dusted, fridge cleaned out, windows washed and some hugs, kisses and books read too. No, as a homeschool mom I can't do it all but I can find a way to get it all done and maybe preserve my sanity too.
